An injunction is being filed against a mining agreement between the Northern Village of Pinehouse and Cameco and Areva.
The deal in question is due to be signed sometime this month, and promises jobs and economic benefits to the community.
There is a clause in a draft version of the deal that calls for residents to refrain from publicly voicing their objections to the companies’ operations.
Owen Swiderski is the deputy leader of the Green Party of Saskatchewan.
He says that clause violates freedom of speech and could set a precedent for future deals down the road:
“This is a direct violation of our Charter, even our Saskatchewan Human Rights Act — never mind the UN Charter.”
The injunction is being handled by Regina lawyer Larry Kowalchuk, who has declined to comment.
