The chief of the Hatchet Lake First Nation says he is disappointed with the results of last week’s Ottawa meeting between Prime Minister Stephen Harper and First Nations leaders and his community may take action.
Bart Tsannie, who recently returned home from Ottawa, says he fully supports Attawapiskat First Nation Chief Theresa Spence’s continued hunger strike and is keenly watching the federal government bills C-38 and C-45.
Chief Tsannie says Hatchet Lake is planning to stage some type of demonstration, possibly along Hwy 905, but it is still too early to tell whether a blockade will be set up or not.
“We are planning something but we don’t know when the exact date is,” he says. “But I am planning with my staff and also with my two colleagues – which is Fond du Lac and Black Lake – and also the vice-chief of the Prince Albert Grand Council.”
Tsannie adds the demonstration could potentially take place on Jan. 28, the same day organizers of the Idle No More movement are planning other protests.
