A dispute is shaping up on a southern Saskatchewan First Nation about the sale of a band-owned company.
Wes George says he and others on the Ochapowace reserve are upset about how the sale of Winn Bay Sand unfolded in the fall of 2011.
According to the website of the Preferred Sands Company, an outfit in the U.S., it paid more than $200 million to buy the assets of the company which included operations in Hanson Lake and Wisconsin.
George says members initially got a payout of $1,500 each but they want to know where the rest of the money has gone.
He says they just want to see the numbers for themselves to make sure the band is handling the money fairly.
He adds it took a year for news of the sale to be released.
In the meantime, Ochapowace First Nation Chief Fred Allary says he has an audit of the sale of the company which he will show to band members but it cannot leave the office.
Allary says the reason for this is because the audit contains a list of people who received money from the sale of the company.
The chief insists his administration has nothing to hide and the reason why he didn’t initially tell members about the sale was due to concerns it might not go through.
