A number of Idle No More demonstrations were affecting traffic in the province today.
Near Stanley Mission, Lac La Ronge Indian band officials were stopping traffic during a peaceful demonstration at the junction of Hwy 102 and the road going into the community.
Northeast of Yorkton, one lane of Hwy 8, between Kamsack and Pelly, was shut down by demonstrators this morning.
A second group set up a blockade south of the peaceful demonstration.
The highway was later reopened.
A protest also took place on Hwy 903 about 31 kilometers north of Meadow Lake.
Demonstrators from the Waterhen Lake First Nation and other supporters took part.
Hwy 21 from Peck Lake to Pierceland was closed by demonstrators as well.
Meanwhile, in Regina, Idle No More organizers wanted to keep things peaceful and focused.
The group held a march down Albert Street to the Legislative Building today shutting down traffic for a few hours.
Police provided an escort and motorists were encouraged to find alternate routes.
Organizer Shawna Oochoo says the inconvenience for drivers is a small price to pay.
She hopes the movement encourages more people to become politically active.
“Were going to be heading in more of a political direction and start educating our community members about the importance of voting in 2015,” Oochoo says.
A couple of grandmothers were also part of today’s Regina march. Phyllis Kretschmer, 76, and another senior marcher say getting their message across does not involve blockades or breaking the law.
“We want to be respectful as people and the four young women who started it, they’re our heroes,” they say.
The Regina march was originally supposed to take place just north of the city on horseback but this plan was scrapped due to extremely icy conditions that posed danger to both horses and riders.
