In the wake of the recent death of a man in custody after being picked up for public drunkenness, Saskatoon police are calling for a long-term care facility to deal with this type of problem in the city.
A 57-year-old man was picked up by police for public intoxication on Jan.15 and later found dead in his cell the next morning.
Police Chief Clive Weighill says there is often not enough reason to make an arrest in situations of public drunkenness and officers will try only to take these individuals into custody as an option of last resort.
Police have ruled out foul play in the death of the 57-year-old man.
