Saskatoon Police are investigating after the death of a man while in custody.

Police say a 57-year-old man was arrested for public intoxication in the 100 block of 3rd Avenue North, shortly after 7 p.m. last night.

The man was also found to have three outstanding warrants and was transported to the detention unit.

Police say the man was assessed by an on-duty paramedic upon arrival but was found dead in his cell just before 8 a.m. today.

An independent investigator with Saskatchewan Justice has been assigned to oversee the investigation.

An autopsy is being done and the coroner’s office, along with the Saskatoon Police Service Major Crimes Unit, is part of the investigation.

The man’s name has not been released.
