The federal government is looking at setting up a committee to examine the large number of Aboriginal women who have gone missing and been murdered but a number of groups say they want more action.
A number of organizations including Human Rights Watch, the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations and the Opposition NDP are demanding the Harper government call a national inquiry into the estimated 600 missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada.
FSIN Chief Perry Bellegarde says in a released statement that the families of these missing and murdered women deserve nothing less than a national inquiry and his organization will continue to press for this.
Last Thursday, an inaugural day of action was held to honour missing and murdered Aboriginal women.
Groups such as Human Rights Watch and the Native Women’s Association of Canada have been highly critical of what they say has been complete inaction by both the government and RCMP to seriously look into the high number of missing and murdered Aboriginal women across the country.
