The CEO of the Hatchet Lake First Nation says she’s hoping an ice-road to the community could be open within the next few days.

Ann Robillard says it couldn’t come at a better time as supplies are starting to run low.

She adds construction of the road-link began three weeks ago and was completed yesterday.

Government officials are out on the ice today checking it with radar.

Robillard says the surface looks good although they are dealing with one small pressure ridge.

“We have guys who chopped it down to a level,” she says. “We opened it wide enough. So hopefully that won’t cause us any grief.”

She adds the problem with pressure ridges is that when the temperature changes the ice starts to heave.

All that remains now is to get the official go-ahead from the provincial government.
