Municipal leaders waiting for an infrastructure announcement from the provincial government at the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association convention this morning will have to keep waiting – at least for the time being anyway.

In his address to the convention, Premier Brad Wall said transfers from the provincial government to the municipalities have risen faster than the overall rate of revenues taken in by the government in recent years.

With resource revenues from oil and potash expected to be down, the Premier said his government will be doing a bit of belt tightening in the upcoming budget and it expects municipalities to do the same.

“We’re going to have a balanced budget but it’s going to be a challenge,” he says. “That’s why we need our partners to work at being as responsible as possible. We need to do the same thing in government.”

The SUMA convention is taking place this week in Saskatoon.
