Researchers from the University of Saskatchewan will be placing collars on moose cows over the next week.
Its part of a project to track moose movement between Saskatoon and Regina, and hopefully reduce the number of collisions with vehicles.
Assistant professor Ryan Brook with the College of Agriculture says the animals will be spotted from the air and fitted with satellite devices and ear tags.
“We’re trying to spread the collars through that whole area between Regina and Saskatoon,” he says. “So basically, between Chamberlain and Dundern is our study area, along Highway 11. On either side of the highway, 50 or 60 kilometres either way – so that general area you may see us flying around.”
Brook says the process this year will take two to three days and next year they hope to collar 15 to 30 bull moose.
Hunters are asked to avoid shooting any moose which have a collar and ear tag.
He says weather permitting, they hope to start on Sunday.
