A Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations vice-chief is encouraging victims of violence to turn to ceremonies as a form of healing.

Kimberly Jonathan was elected to the FSIN last year and since that time she has spoken out about the need for a national inquiry to examine the plight of missing and murdered Aboriginal women.

Jonathan says she hopes an inquiry is called soon and that it focuses on both regional and national issues.

When it comes to violence and dealing with its harmful effects, she says it has been traditional ceremonies that have helped her cope with her own troubles.

Jonathan adds the ceremonies have also given her an understanding of who she is.

She says she has used this gift to propel herself forward and into positive things like public service.
