A Regina judge has followed the recommendations of a sentencing circle granting freedom to a woman from the Sakimay First Nation in southeast Saskatchewan.

She has been in custody for the past two and a half years.

Prosecutors wanted to keep her there for another two years for the latest in a series of fraud related crimes.

However, Judge Linton Smith disagreed opting to give her one more chance.

He placed her on two years probation and ordered restitution for some of the victims.

Irene’s sister-in-law Veronica Peepeetch says it was a good day for justice.

Peepeetch has racked up more than 300 fraud related convictions over the past 40 years.

Judge Linton Smith says if she finds herself in trouble with the law again she can expect to spend the rest of her life in prison.
