Officials with the three northern Saskatchewan health regions are continuing efforts to increase testing and treatment for the HIV virus.
Deputy Medical Health Officer Dr. Moliehi Khaketla says its part of the provincial plan to increase testing by 50 per cent by the end of March 2014.
She says treatment for people with HIV is also increasing with more specialists available across the north.
Khaketla says since January 2012 an average of 90 HIV tests have been done per month, compared to 60 per month in the past.
She adds a training program for health care workers, specifically dealing with HIV cases has also been developed.
Khaketla says the number of cases of HIV continues to increase in northern Saskatchewan, mostly because of injection drug use.
