Poundmaker Chief Duane Antoine and seven others were sentenced for Treaty Land Entitlement fraud Friday.
All pleaded guilty last year.
Antoine and his brother Teddy, a former chief, each received a 20-month suspended sentence.
They must complete 100 hours of community service and pay $2,500 restitution.
Former TLE trustees Hickson Weenie, Burton Baptiste and Norman Favel each received an 18-month suspended sentence and must do 50 hours of community service.
Each of them must also pay $2,500 in restitution.
Wendell Lee Antoine, Duane and Teddy’s nephew, said the two should be thrown out of office.
However, Judge Dan O’Hanlon said the court is not the proper place to deal with issues like that.
Colin Favel and Bryan Tootoosis were each theoretically sentenced to one year in jail.
But Judge O’Hanlon said it could be served in the community, followed by a year’s probation.
For the first six months, they’re restricted to a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day a week curfew – except for employment purposes.
They each must do 100 hours of community service before May 31 and pay $12,500 dollars restitution.
Also, they’re prohibited from sitting on any TLE boards in Saskatchewan for the duration of their sentences.
Former TLE trustee Irene Tootoosis got the lightest sentence because Judge O’Hanlon said she had no prior criminal record, entered an early guilty plea and showed remorse for what she had done.
She received a conditional discharge with 12 months probation and is required to do 50 hours of community service.
Tootoosis is also not allowed to sit as a TLE trustee during her sentence.
O’Hanlon pointed out if she follows all those conditions, Tootoosis will receive an absolute discharge.
