A number of First Nations in the province could face spring flooding.

In southern Saskatchewan this includes Standing Buffalo, Pasqua, Muscowpetung and Piapot First Nations which are in an area expecting very high spring run off.

Regina, Moose Jaw and Indian head are also included in this area.

The other area of concern is halfway between Saskatoon and Prince Albert including the Beardys Okemasis First Nation and the One Arrow reserve.

The executive director of hydrology for SaskWater, John Fahlman, says if Saskatchewan gets a quick melt, the flooding will be worse.

The minister responsible for the water security agency, Ken Cheveldayoff, says preparations are already underway.

The SaskWater agency has sand bags on the ready, it will provide online updates and is holding meetings around the province with communities that could be affected by flooding.

First nations that could see flooding are already in the loop.

Cheveldayoff says the province is better prepared to handle floods this year than was the case in 2011.

Since then, more than $25 million have been spent on flood prevention measures.

This includes nearly 600 flood mitigation projects around the province.
