A rare 1885 Northwest Rebellion medal will be on display in Regina this weekend along with artifacts owned by the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan.

About 5,600 medals were presented to members of the militia who fought against the Métis in the uprising.

Regina Coin Club president George Manz says this particular medal is a rare sight at coin shows.

“The medal itself is actually called the Northwest Canada Medal,” he says. “It was given out to local forces, basically Canadian Militia forces, and civilians who joined the militia. The ribbon is blue-grey with red stripes and is made of silver.”

The medal will be on display Saturday and Sunday at the Turvey Centre, just north of Regina.

It was originally awarded to gunner William Payne of Number Four Battery, Montreal Garrison Artillery.
