A family living upstream of Cumberland House is doing what they can to save their home from floodwaters.

Rene and Solomon Carriere are putting plywood over their doors and windows and recently moved 22 sled dogs to Nipawin.

It’s a 90-minute trip by speed boat each way, so the Carrieres are quite tired.

In addition to sandbagging, Rene says they also are trying to protect their family’s cemetery from the flood as well:

“We also cover the graves as best we can so that there’s no damage done to the graves.  To me that’s the…anything else can be replaced, but still, to me, that’s the most difficult part.”

She says her father and daughter are both buried there.

Carriere explains it was just a few nights ago RCMP came to their door and told them they would have to leave immediately.

The reason was because water was being released from the E.B. Campbell dam.
