The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations says FSIN vice-chief Kimberly Jonathan has been reinstated.
The reasons behind the move are confusing.
Two weeks ago, the FSIN said a by-election would have to be held because new information had surfaced about the election last fall that saw Jonathan elected.
The federation said a problem with the voting machine had rendered the election null and void.
However, in a release today, the FSIN says the Executive Council/Indian Government Commission reached an impasse after a lengthy debate over the matter.
The commission is comprised of 34 members that includes chiefs, tribal chiefs, senators and the FSIN Executive.
It could not arrive at the decision needed to call the by-election, so instead it is sending the matter to the chiefs-in-Assembly.
They also are recommending the chiefs vacate the decision of the FSIN Appeals Tribunal.
The matter will be spoken to at the next FSIN legislative assembly on June 5 and 6.
So, for now at least, Jonathan is back in.
The FSIN says it considers this matter to be an internal process and it won’t be commenting any further.
