RCMP have arrested and charged a 19-year-old Pelican Narrows man following the house fire that claimed the life of a 10-year-old girl on September 24.

An autopsy was perfomed as part of the investigation — and the coroner’s office has concluded that the remains are those of 10-year-old Denasia Highway.

Denasia and her great-grandparents were in the home at the time.  She initially escaped the blaze, but locals have said that she went back inside after assuming that her great-grandfather was still in the house.  Her remains were found after the structure had burned to the ground.

Darryl Craig Sewap has been charged with arson and criminal negligence causing death.

At last word, he was still in custody.
