A private member’s bill to amend the Indian Act has passed second reading in the Senate.
Bill C-428 is the brainchild of Northern Saskatchewan MP Rob Clarke, it would change many sections of the act that aren’t currently used, remove all references to residential schools, repeal the wills and estates section and return control over publication of bylaws to First Nations.
Now that the bill has passed second reading, it will sit over the winter break before the opposition formally responds to it, after that it will move on to committee.
Senator Thanh Hai Ngo was the senate member who sponsored the Bill.
