The Hatchet Lake First Nation has announced the purchase of a Prince Albert-based trucking company.
Hatchet Lake Development Limited has acquired the assets of Red’s Transport and the new company is known as Caribou Transport.
It is the first First Nations-owned transportation company providing services to the Wollaston Lake area.
Hatchet Lake Development CEO Anne Robillard says it will create revenue and jobs.
“There will be four semis, and four 3-tons and multi-trailers — and they’ll be servicing the routes of central and northern Saskatchewan. Down the line, we’re going to be looking at training for drivers and also clerical staff, as well. So I’m sure there will be some job creation down the line.”
The fleet includes tractors, reefers, flat beds, and 3-tons.
Upcoming plans include establishing a depot in Wollaston, which should be up and running in the New Year.
Caribou Transport is also taking over a depot and property on Old Highway 2 south of Prince Albert.
