A new program is being offered in Prince Albert aimed at training high school students for careers in emergency services.
The High School Emergency Services Response Training Program was unveiled yesterday.
Starting in January, the program will train students in fields such as police and fire emergency services, disaster assistance and First Aid and CPR.
The three-year program will work with students in Grades 10 through 12 at both St. Mary High School and Wesmor Community High School.
The province’s commissioner of emergency management and fire safety is Duane McKay.
McKay says the idea for the program came in 2011 after the province was hit by severe flooding, and there weren’t enough people to help in areas such as transportation of supplies and sandbagging. He says there is a need to train young people to help in emergency services.
Dolton Lariviere is a Grade 10 student at Wesmor Community High. Originally from Weyakwin, Lariviere has already done some firefighter training and is interested in learning more.
The new training program will start with a total of 35 students from students at both high schools.
