The main witness in the sexual assault trial of a former Regina high school teacher will be back on the witness stand Tuesday morning after a gruelling cross-examination by the defence on Monday.
He told the court 36-year-old Corey Matthews, his former Scott Collegiate teacher, had sexual relations with him on four occasions in early 2006.
The alleged victim was about 15 at the time. He says Matthews often drove him to and from school and took him out for lunch.
He says, on two occasions, he performed oral sex on Mathews while in his parked truck — once about a block from the school during the noon hour, and the other time on a hill in Wascana Park.
He says on two other occasions he had anal sex with Matthews — once at the teacher’s home, and the other time at his own home when Matthews drove him there to retrieve some school work.
Defence lawyer Barry Nychuk questioned why he waited five years before making a police report, and suggested he was hoping he would get some form of compensation after seeing a story on the news about Matthews being charged.
Under cross-examination, the witness admitted he is a criminal with 41 previous convictions and is dishonest, having lied to police on numerous occasions — but he denied making up the stories about Matthews.
The alleged victim will be back on the witness stand for more cross-examination Tuesday morning. Then the case is expected to be turned over to the defence.
Matthews’ lawyer says he will talk to his client about taking the witness stand in his own defence, but would not say whether a decision has been made.
Matthews is facing one count of sexual assault and one count of abusing a position of trust or authority. Initially, there were three victims and more than a dozen charges, but the prosecution has dropped most of them and is focusing its case on the one victim and the two charges.
