The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is taking aim at another chief over his salary.

The federation’s Prairie director, Colin Craig, says Chief Wallace Fox of the Onion Lake Cree Nation makes more than Premier Brad Wall, even though Fox serves less than 4,000 band members.

According to the taxpayers federation, Fox earned a tax-free income of $123,576 last year.  The CTF, using Ernst and Young’s online tax calculator, says that is equivalent to an income of $191,500 earned off-reserve.

That gives Fox slightly more take home pay than the premier, whose taxable income is $191,247:

“The sheer lopsidedness of the pay — I mean, it’s off the charts when you consider that a small community’s chief is making more than the Premier of Saskatchewan, who has to serve over a million people.”

Craig says Fox has also been one of the most vocal opponents of new federal legislation which requires chiefs and councils to publicly post their salaries.

Fox has not been immediately available for comment.
