A group of eight students from Churchill High School in La Ronge are getting a lesson in outdoor survival today.
As part of the Northern Lifestyles class, they will learn how to build a fire and a shelter in the winter — and then camp out overnight.
Tom Charles, a local tracker, will provide the instruction and says it is the kind of experience which would be helpful to many people.
“Everybody should, whether you’re young or you’re old, if you’re not too experienced in the bush, if you’re in a controlled environment, test yourself to see how well you do in making a fire, making a shelter and staying out there overnight — not only in the winter time, but also in the summer time.”
The survival training is a partnership between the high school and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band.
The students are getting a break from the weather. The overnight low Tuesday night was -38 degrees Celsius. Tonight, the low is forecast to only get to -14 degrees.
