The Saskatchewan Council for International Cooperation is honouring the Idle No More movement with a 2014 Global Citizen Award.
The award was created in 1990 to recognize individuals and groups who are committed to international cooperation and peace.
SCIC Communications Officer Robbi Humble says the award is being given not only to the four women who founded Idle No More, but also to everyone involved:
“Idle No More obviously has taken the world by storm. The work that the founders did eventually has taken off and has built connections and increased solidarity around the globe when it comes to Indigenous rights and bridging the divide between settler communities and Indigenous communities”.
This year’s other recipient is is Mark Bigland-Pritchard, a Saskatoon physicist and clean energy consultant working for environmental protection.
The Global Citizen Awards will be presented Saturday evening during a ceremony at the University of Saskatchewan campus in Saskatoon.
