The Federation of Saskatchewan Nations is in dire need of money and delegates at its winter legislatve assembly are considering proposals that would take monies from the First Nations Gaming Trust and use them to support the organization.

The FSIN issued layoff notices to most of its staff last month after a series of transfer cuts from the Harper government.

Some, such as Muskowekwan First Nation Chief Reg Bellrose, are in support of the idea.

“Shortage of money is going to hurt everybody in Indian country, at every level,” he says. “We’re going to feel it in Muskowekwan, too — but we’re prepared to sacrifice some of the funds.”

However, others, such as Saskatoon Tribal Council Chief Felix Thomas, say it may be time for the FSIN to make do with the funds it has.

“If we as tribal councils can’t make do with what we get, then it’s something we have to live with,” he says.

Delegates will continue to debate these proposals at the assembly today.
