MBC is marking a special anniversary today.
It’s been 30 years since our network began broadcasting to the people of northern Saskatchewan.
Nap Gardiner was the network’s first chairperson and president.
He says MBC started with a vision of helping northern residents move forward:
“We understood that having a form of communication that we all could share our positions and thoughts and notions and ideas through, that perhaps we could evolve into something that might be better than what were experiencing at that point in time.”
He says he’s proud of the hard work that went into setting up MBC and also of where it’s gone:
“I can’t imagine what the north would look like at this point without MBC. It’s served a significant purpose and I think it’s immeasurable and fundamentally important.”
MBC is currently heard in more than 70 communities in Northern Saskatchewan along with a handful in Alberta and Manitoba.
It’s the only full-time provider of Cree and Denesuline radio-programming in the province.
