One man is dead and another is fighting for his life after becoming stranded while on a rescue mission near the Manitoba/Saskatchewan border.

The pair were from Lac Brochet and had left the community on Friday to search for a missing man from Wollaston Lake.

The man from Wollaston was located but the two searchers, who were members of the Lac Brochet Search and Rescue Team went missing.

A search party from Wollaston Lake was eventually able to locate them yesterday around 4 p.m. but it was too late:

“Unfortunately one of the Lac Brochet individuals was found deceased and he was a 47 year-old male and the other Lac Brochet individual who is 40 year-old was located and transported to hospital.”

RCMP Sergeant Craig Cleary says the men were located around 25 miles east of Wollaston Lake.

At this point it appears one of the men’s snowmobiles couldn’t start he says.

The 40 year-old man is reported to be in critical condition in a Winnipeg hospital.

RCMP are still investigating.
