A northern Saskatchewan teacher is doing her part to raise awareness of how poverty affects the province.

Renee Carriere teaches at Charlebois Community School in Cumberland House and she has incorporated the “Poverty Costs” campaign as part of her curriculum.

Carriere says as part of the exercise students are asked to answer questions about what poverty is by going out into the local community and taking photographs

“We have several questions around poverty on our wall,” she says. “And the students – it’s a Grade 9 class – they use a camera and they go out into the community and answer the question with their camera. So, it’s really a photo voice project.”

Students will continue to answer various poverty-related questions in this fashion over the next six weeks.
