The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce kicked off a visit to northern communities Monday morning starting with a meeting in Buffalo Narrows.
Sixteen business and government representatives are part of the Northern Business Task Force.
The goal is to gather information about the opportunities and challenges of doing business in remote communities.
Chamber CEO Steve McLellan says there is a reason for planning the trip at this time of year.
“We intentionally picked this time of the year because we wanted to see the ice roads and the life in the north during the winter,” he says. “Transportation is one of the key things we are investigating both from an air and ice road perspective, we’re very conscious of the cost of things like food products and bringing equipment in.”
The group will be visiting the McArthur River uranium mine site, Stony Rapids, the Black Lake school and a La Ronge business.
McLellan says most northern communities do not have a chamber of commerce and more attention needs to be paid to northern Saskatchewan and its numerous business opportunities.
