With warmer weather on the way, Saskatchewan Environment is reminding anglers to remove their ice fishing shacks from lakes.

The deadline for getting the shelters off of lakes north of Hwy 16 is Mar. 31.

Conservation Officer Gary Provencher says it is a good idea to comply with the provincial regulations.

“If the shelters aren’t removed, owners may be prosecuted and the structure and the contents may be confiscated and removed or destroyed by our ministry so there is some implications if shacks are left out there,” he says.

He adds strong winds have scattered debris and garbage across some lakes.

“We did have some ice shacks that were blown around the ice and left some materials on the ice so we are advising ice fishermen that any debris left from the ice shack or other litter including fish offal, the remains of fish, must be taken away when ice shacks are removed from the ice.”

Provencher says as the ice conditions deteriorate this spring, anyone heading out onto lakes should use caution.
