A compromise deal has been reached ending a week-long stalemate at the Cowessess First Nation east of Regina.

Protesters have removed chains from the doors of the band office and the school after a weekend meeting with the chief and the RCMP.

Protest organizer Dana Pelletier says the chief has agreed to meet with them to discuss concerns and has promised not to take disciplinary action against protesters:

“And the protesters decided that we would take down the chains in good faith and that we would hold him to his word that no one would be fired or disciplined for participating in the protest.”

A special band meeting will be held on Thursday.

In the meantime, the protesters will still be in front of the band office — but they will not be blocking anyone from coming or going.
