Dry weather over the next few days would be a big help for members of the James Smith Cree Nation who have been temporarily relocated to Melfort.
About 40 band members were moved out of their homes this week because of high water conditions which had made some roads impassable and affected some services in the community.
Saskatchewan Commissioner of Emergency Management Duane McKay says provincial officials have been monitoring the situation and have contributed equipment:
“We have supplied some consulting, we have a couple of emergency services officers have been working with the community over the last couple of weeks in preparation to the flooding. We’ve also sent out equipment such as steamers to clear channels in culverts and so on, as well as sand bags.”
McKay says the province also works closely with the Prince Albert Grand Council to help northern First Nations deal with flooding.
He also says so far this spring there have not been reports of serious flood damage on other reserves, although they have been in touch with officials from One Arrow First Nation.
