The mayor of La Ronge has announced he will seek the Saskatchewan Party nomination for the Cumberland constituency in the next provincial election.
Thomas Sierzycki says if he wins the candidacy, he will continue on as mayor until the election.
Sierzycki says he believes it would be a positive move to have an MLA who is part of the governing party representing the riding:
“Northern Saskatchewan currently isn’t represented in the government, and I think that needs to happen in order for us to not only get the basic services that we are receiving, but also to put us in the forefront in terms of noting the great things that are happening but also the supports that we need in order to move forward.”
Sierzycki says the meeting to choose the candidate for the Cumberland riding will be held in late summer or early fall.
Sierzycki has been the mayor in La Ronge since 2009. One of Canada’s youngest elected officials, he was elected to town council at the age of 18 and later as mayor at the age of 21.
The Cumberland riding is currently held by New Democrat Doyle Vermette.
The constituency has never been held by a member of the Saskatchewan Party.
