Six more people in Prince Albert with special needs will have access to a safe place to live.

Today marked the start of construction of a new rental housing development for individuals with complex needs.

The project is located at 3096 5A Avenue East and it will have six one-bedroom units.

Each unit is approximately 560 square feet.

The federal and provincial governments jointly contributed over $400,000 to the housing project.

The balance of the required funding will be provided by River Bank Development Corporation.

Brian Howell from River Bank Development says there is a great need for affordable housing in Prince Albert:

“The vacancy rate is quite high, I think it’s seven per cent, but the vacancy rate in social housing is zero.  So, you talk to the housing authority, to PA Community Housing, to Northern Spruce or to ourselves, or to the lower-rent or lower-priced landlords — you’ll find everyone is full.”

Construction is scheduled to be completed in December.
