A group of La Ronge residents who rode a big bike to raise money to fight cardiovascular disease Monday night raised $26,043.68 in the process.

That’s a total that provincial Heart and Stroke Foundation officials say is “nearly unprecedented” for its Big Bike event.

In fact, if the team had simply reached its goal of $20,000, they would have come in nearly $10,000 ahead of last year’s top fundraising team in the province.

Team leader Crystal Myslicki was blown away when she got the news:

“I was pretty stunned.  When the lady from the Heart and Stroke Foundation phoned me, I had to sit down.  It’s a pretty big number and it took my breath away.”

AREVA contributed $10,000 of this year’s amount.

The previous best fundraising total for this event in La Ronge was approximately $8,600, set last year.
