Prince Albert community members gathered this afternoon to march for the victim of a recent vicious assault.
A homeless woman was brutally assaulted on June 1st at 10:20 am in the 1200 block of First Avenue West.
She is currently in an Edmonton hospital where she is still in critical condition.
March co-organizer Camilla Smallboy is urging people to stop turning a blind eye to the violence going on in the city:
“There’s so much violence going on in the streets, and people are not speaking up. They just pass by when they see couples fighting or anything like that. They don’t step in or they don’t phone the cops. You know, just one phone call can save someone’s life. If people heard her screaming or anything, they could have saved her from that torment she was in.”
Prince Albert Police Service Chief Troy Cooper says he came to show his support and to assure the public that the person who is responsible for this crime will be caught:
“It’s something that we need to keep as part of our conversation here. And every opportunity we can we need to stand up against that to make sure that everyone is aware that it’s an issue here — because it certainly is. The investigation is in its early stages, but I have every confidence that it will come to a successful conclusion.”
The honour march began at the Venice House parking lot and continued on to where she was found — the Margo Fournier Centre.
