The Assembly of First Nations has voted in favour of electing a new chief in December at a special chiefs assembly in Winnipeg.
The group agreed to back a motion that will see the new chief serve a mandate of 3 1/2 years.
Dozens of chiefs spoke and there was overwhelming support for the December election.
Most chiefs agreed that a new national chief was needed before the federal election set for October 2015.
The position became vacant after Shawn Atleo unexpectedly stepped down in May following five years at the helm.
Atleo resigned under criticism for his support of proposed changes to federal legislation related to aboriginal education.
The federal government has since put the policy changes on hold.
The Assembly of First Nations is holding its annual, three-day meeting in Halifax where they are also expected to discuss resource development and education, among other issues.
