A blanket dance was performed in Marlene Bird’s honour this morning at the AFN annual meeting in Halifax.

She is the homeless Aboriginal woman who was savagely beaten and burned in Prince Albert last month.

Cheryl Maloney of the Nova Scotia Native Women’s Association was touched by the moving ceremony.

“I just want to thank everyone for being here and walking behind the blanket, and knowing this tragedy that happened to Marlene is happening in Canada.”

Bird is facing a long recovery after having both of her legs amputated and facial reconstruction surgery.

The suspect in the attack, 29-year-old Leslie Black, made a court appearance today in Prince Albert on charges of attempted murder and aggravated sexual assault.
