Four days of jigging, square dancing and fiddling kicked off Thursday morning at the Back to Batoche Days Festival.

The annual event takes place near the Batoche historic site about 100 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.

One of the major themes of this year’s festival is honouring Métis war veterans.

To honour the war veterans, about 80 youth will be running from Saskatoon to Batoche beginning on Friday and a special monument will be unveiled on Saturday morning.

Métis Senator Nora Cummings will make an announcement Thursday afternoon regarding an Aboriginal cancer surveillance system in the province.

This year’s festivities also feature chuck wagon races, an artisans’ village and a number of musical guests.
