A retired United States coast guard officer is traveling to La Ronge to help in the search for a man who went missing a dozen years ago.
In July 2002, 72-year-old Percy McKenzie was last seen near Powell Island on Lac La Ronge and he hasn’t been seen since.
At the time of his disappearance, the lake had been rough.
Craig Thorngren of Seattle, Washington has many years of experience working with underwater camera and sonar equipment and will be assisting searchers from Grandmother’s Bay.
Volunteer coordinator Leon Charles says a number of people will be involved in the effort.
“We have ten people from Grandmother’s Bay to go out and help with the search, it takes three people to run the machine and do the other stuff, the more guys were have the more eyes because there is two screens to look at for the sonar and the camera,” he says.
Charles says once the search for the missing man at Reindeer Lake has concluded, the search for Percy McKenzie can begin.
The operation on Lac La Ronge is expected to last five days.
