A second arrest has been made in the case of a fatal fire near Uranium City four years ago.

Thirty-year-old B.C. resident Christopher Champagne was arrested July 5 on Vancouver Island after a warrant was issued for his arrest on two counts of manslaughter.

Champagne was returned to Saskatchewan on Friday and will make his first court appearance on these charges in La Ronge Provincial Court Monday.

On June 7, 29-year-old Michael LaRocque of Stony Rapids was also charged with two counts of manslaughter in connection to the case.

Jack Cochrane and Philip Nighttraveller both died in a house fire near Uranium City on Jan. 4, 2010.

Cpl. Doug Nordick of the RCMP’s historical case unit says the two suspects have been under police scrutiny for some time and no other arrests are anticipated in the immediate future.

“From the onset of the investigation, Michael LaRocque and Christopher Champagne were identified as persons of interest and there was never really any information besides that,” he says.

Nordick adds the remoteness of Uranium City and the fact it doesn’t have its own RCMP detachment has hindered the police investigation.
