A national treaty gathering kicked off Monday at the Treaty 4 grounds in Fort Qu’Appelle.

The gathering includes representatives from Treaties 1-11 areas across Canada.

Monday’s agenda included an elders gathering and an evening forum for academics to discuss treaty and inherent rights issues.

Sakimay First Nation Chief Lynn Acoose says a total of four days of meetings will be held.

“We’ve structured the next three days on the theme of the day before treaty, the day of treaty and the day after treaty, so the first day we are going to be discussing our inherent responsibilities and Indigenous people and what those responsibilities mean,” she says.

Special guests include the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, Vaughn Schofield, and representatives from the Douglas Treaty area of British Columbia.

All members of treaty nations are welcome to attend and camping facilities are available.
