A heavy equipment operator program targeted at Aboriginal people in Saskatoon has seven new graduates.

The Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technology offers the Aboriginal Heavy Equipment Operator and Class 1A License Pre-Employment Training Program.

It is offered in collaboration with the City of Saskatoon and Gabriel Dumont Institute.

Since 2010, 37 students have graduated from the program and 80 per cent of these students have found long-term employment in Saskatchewan.

Fifty-three per cent of these graduates have found employment with the City of Saskatoon.

Students in the program takes courses in ground disturbance and transportation of dangerous goods, defensive driving and heavy equipment operator training.

The graduation ceremony took place at Wanuskewin Heritage Park on Friday morning.
