The Kinsmen Water Park will be $25,000 richer after the Kraft Celebration Tour rolls through Prince Albert Wednesday.
The city has made it to the top ten in the national tour and a live broadcast of TSN’s Sports Centre will take place at the water park.
The money will go toward the waterslides at the park that are currently closed due to safety concerns.
Shannon Hurl, chair of the “Save of our summer, save our slide” committee, says people in the community want to see the waterslides back in operation.
“Everybody comes to Kinsmen Water Park at least once in a summer,” she says. “I know last year they were saying they had 30,000 people through the doors and you can’t tell me that shutting down the waterslides hasn’t affected the attendance because there was a report in the paper that said attendance has been down nearly 60 per cent, so people are definitely missing the waterslides.”
Hurl says the day will begin with swimming at 1 p.m. and everyone is encouraged to wear green.
“At 2 p.m. is when all the activities start and there is an unbelievable amount of food. They were planning for 500 people, so come on Prince Albert, I want to see them run out of food.”
The cheque for the $25,000 will be presented at 3 p.m. with the TSN live broadcast following at 4 p.m.
Hurl also says that throughout the day players from the Prince Albert Mintos and Prince Albert Raiders will be signing autographs with TSN’s Darren Dutchysen and Kate Beirness joining them after their broadcast.
Prince Albert will also have a chance at another $100,000 when TSN announces the grand prizewinner on Aug. 25.
Hurl says she is hopeful the TSN prize money, $60,000 promised by the city and some private investment will be enough to fix the waterslides.
