The Saskatoon Food Bank is coming off one of its most successful milk months in recent memory.

The organization raised just over $63,000 for the milk program during last month alone.

Saskatoon Food Bank executive director Laurie O’Connor says September’s milk program fundraising activities were greatly helped by a $30,000 donation from the United Way and $28,000 from Cameco which has put the organization in a good position to reach its target by the end of the fiscal year.

“The Milk For Children Program costs $120,000 a year, we’re half way through our fiscal year and I’m happy to say we’ve raised $93,000 towards that goal,” she says.

O’Connor says ensuring children in the community get the proper nutrition they need is a big part of the organization’s activities and this is why the milk program is so important.

“Sometimes we don’t want to think about children being hungry in our community but the food bank thinks that nutrition in food baskets is very important. So it’s very important for us to provide one litre of fresh milk for all children 17 years and younger.”

The fundraising drive goes until the end of March and the food bank plans to purchase 80,000 litres of milk with money raised.
