The federal government announced funding on Friday to improve access to healthy food in northern Canadian communities.
While most of the funding will go toward communities in Iqualuit and northern Manitoba, a few northern Saskatchewan communities will also get a share.
Black Lake, Fond-du-Lac and Stony Rapids are all eligible for partial food subsidies through the program.
“Northerners like all Canadians should have access to the fresh, nutritious foods they need to be able to contribute and be prosperous in a growing northern economy,” Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Bernard Valcourt says. “Today’s announcement is a clear demonstration of our government’s continued commitment to increasing access to healthy perishable foods in remote northern communities.”
The announcement includes an increase of $11.3 million to the Nutrition North Subsidy budget.
In total, the government plans to invest over $133 million for nutritional foods for northerners.
