The Saskatchewan Indian Culture Centre’s First Nations Language Keepers Conference is taking place this week in Saskatoon.
Thursday morning’s keynote speaker was Don Thornton of Thornton Media.
The Las Vegas-based company provides First Nations language-teaching applications for handheld devices and computers that serve 200 Indigenous communities across North America.
Thornton says computer software cannot teach a First Nations language but it can serve as an effective learning aid.
“Our apps are not a tool that will solve all your problems,” he says. “It is a tool that is meant to be used in conjunction with human beings teaching each other but it is a tool that can be used with any type of language learning program.”
The two-day conference wrapped up on Thursday.
