The body that oversees Canadian colleges announced an Indigenous education protocol Wednesday.
Colleges and Institutes Canada has put forward a new document that pledges to improve education for Aboriginal people in its post-secondary institutions across the country.
CICan official Anna Toneguzzo says because a large number of Aboriginal learners attend colleges, polytechnics and institutes across the nation, the organization believes it is a high priority to put an Indigenous education protocol in place.
“Because colleges have a vast reach, we’re in about 3,000 communities across the country, they’re closer to Indigenous communities and that’s another reason why they’re go to institutions.”
The protocol has a number of principles including implementing intellectual and cultural traditions of Indigenous people in the curriculum and committing to increasing the number of Aboriginal employees.
CICan represents 137 post-secondary institutions across the country serving 3,000 communities and 1.5 million learners.
